She must “squiddle” from one place to another instead of walk. Sure the young Eileen is at a great disadvantage in her early years. But that’s not how Cronin’s memoir, Mermaid, comes across. You might think that if you’ve spent your earthly time in prime physical condition, her story will not connect with yours. Eileen Cronin, for example, was born without legs. But some people get a truly strange variable thrown into their stew. Lives get twisted and re-shaped by crazy family members, creative impulses, and random events. It’s amusing-and sometimes shocking-to discover the great variety of messes humans can create with similar ingredients. When I read a memoir, I feel like I’m climbing into the kitchen of someone I’ve never met to see if their recipes for life trump mine. ![]() 5/29/2023 0 Comments Dark Star Safari by Paul Theroux![]() ![]() ![]() 'Always a terrific teller of tales and conjurer of exotic locales, he writes lean prose that lopes along at a compelling pace'Sunday Times the most gifted, most prodigal writer of his generation'Jonathan Raban 'One needs energy to keep up with the extraordinary, productive restlessness of Paul Theroux. Safari in Swahili simply means "journey", and this is the ultimate safari. It is a journey of discovery and of rediscovery - of the unknown and the unexpected, but also of people and places he knew as a young and optimistic teacher forty years before. Travelling across bush and desert, down rivers and across lakes, and through country after country, Theroux visits some of the most beautiful landscapes on earth, and some of the most dangerous. The basic plot line is of a sister and brother who both live on a farm in Massachusetts not too far from Boston. Not quite long enough for one, not quite short enough for the other. It’s a quick read, is rather a cross between a novel and novella, I think. I am not familiar with either the author or the title, but the review looked good and I found it on Project Gutenberg. ![]() Found somewhere on my travels around the interweb, this title popped up on list of fun classics to read. However, the Dracula Daily website includes an archive where readers can get caught up on their missed emails. ![]() ![]() In 2021's post-mortem blog post, Kirkland admits that he believes the experience of Dracula Daily was best for people who were signed up from the beginning. In Dracula Daily, Kirkland strictly adheres to the dates of the materials to create a linear narrative, meaning that the rest of the cast's letters are interspersed throughout Jonathan's journal, highlighting the contrast between Jonathan's time at Dracula's castle and everyone else's experience back home. The letters between other characters like Mina Murray and Lucy Westenra start in the fifth chapter, with the first letter sent on May 9th. ![]() For example, the first four chapters of the novel focus on Jonathan Harker's journal from May 3rd to June 30th.
